Background
CNTF or ciliary neurotrophic factor, is a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines alongside LIF, OSM, and cardiotropin-1. It promotes gene expression, cell survival, and differentiation of sensory, ciliary, and motor neurons. It promotes rod and cone photoreceptor regeneration in response to retinal injury and degeneration. It is also thought to control B cell differentiation in the bone marrow. CNTF can be used to maintain neural stem cells in the pluripotent state, or it can promote their further differentiation into glial precursor cells, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes (PMID: 30504707, 21912637, 26487326).
