Background
Interleukin-19 (IL-19) is part of a smaller subfamily of interleukins that also includes IL-20, IL-22, and IL-24. These cytokines are all classified by their shared ability to bind and signal through the IL-20 receptor. IL-19 primarily exerts anti-inflammatory effects. It upregulates the production of IL-10 in PBMCs, particularly monocytes and dendritic cells and promotes the secretion of Th2-associated cytokine secretion from CD4+ T cells. It is thought to favor the polarization of naïve T cells into Th2s over Th1s, yielding a more anti-inflammatory phenotype. IL-19 also has several anti-inflammatory roles in vascular diseases, with its levels often increased in these instances to protect arteries from excessive damage (PMID: 29681905, 15827959).
