Background Information
Hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 12 (HSD17B12, also known as KAR and SDR12C1) is a key enzyme of steroid metabolism pathway19 and is the human homolog of the yeast 3-ketoacyl-CoA reductase that catalyzes the second reaction in each VLCFA elongation cycle. It also acts as a drug-metabolizing enzyme. HSD17B12 deficiency in embryonic stem cells reduced the production of arachidonic acid, a precursor of prostaglandins.
