Background
MDA-MB-231 nuclear extract was prepared from cell cultures of the human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-231 cell line. The MDA-MB-231 cell line was derived from a pleural effusion of a 51 year old Caucasian female with an intraductal carcinoma. Although MDA-MB-231 cells are epithelial in morphology, they display a mesenchymal-like/ER-negative/ERBB2-negative phenotype. These cells are characterized by the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and transforming growth factor α receptor (TGFRα). EGFR and TGFR are receptors that are most commonly associated with human tumorigenesis. Interestingly, although MDA-MB-231 cells express EGFR, they lack a proliferative response to EGF. MDA-MB-231 cells are most frequently used in research as a model for breast adenocarcinoma.
Application Notes
MDA-MB-231 nuclear extract is specifically recommended for breast cancer studies.
