Product Information
KE20025 is a solid phase sandwich Enzyme Linked-Immuno-Sorbent Assay (Sandwich ELISA). The rat IL-2 ELISA kit is to be used to detect and quantify protein levels of endogenous rat IL-2. The assay recognizes rat IL-2. An antibody specific for rat IL-2 has been pre-coated onto the microwells. The rat IL-2 protein in samples is captured by the coated antibody after incubation. Following extensive washing, another horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated antibody specific for rat IL-2 is added to detect the captured rat IL-2 protein. For signal development, followed by Tetramethyl-benzidine (TMB) reagent. Solution containing sulfuric acid is used to stop color development and the color intensity which is proportional to the quantity of bound protein is measurable at 450 nm with the correction wavelength set at 630 nm.

Background Information
IL-2 (Interleukin-2) is an interleukin, a type of cytokine signaling molecule in the immune system. It regulates white blood cells (leukocytes, often lymphocytes) that are responsible for immunity. The major sources of IL-2 are activated CD4+ T cells and activated CD8+ T cells. IL-2 mediates its effects by binding to IL-2 receptors which are expressed by lymphocytes. IL-2 signal can be transduced by 3 different signaling pathways: JAK-STAT, PI3K/Akt/mTOR and MAPK/ERK pathway. IL-2 plays a role in regulating the adaptive immune system by controlling the survival and proliferation of regulatory T-cells, which are required for the maintenance of immune tolerance. It also promotes proliferation of activated B cells and subsequently immunoglobulin production. IL-2 has been used to treat immune-deficiencies like HIV, and induce immune response against tumors.
