Background

FGF-1 is a non-glycosylated and single polypeptide protein that is a well-classified member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) superfamily. It stimulates DNA synthesis and proliferation in a wide range of cells and is also involved in promoting angiogenesis and wound healing processes. It is capable of binding with all four FGFRs and exerts its intracellular effects through downstream PLCγ and MAPK pathways. Dysregulated FGF-1 signaling has been associated with tumor invasion and metastasis. It is also capable of inducing apoptosis in response to vascular injury and may have use as a potential therapeutic for cardiovascular diseases (PMID: 15469994, 24829797).
