Background
Erythropoietin (Epo) is a member of the EPO/TPO family. It is a secreted, glycosylated cytokine composed of four alpha helical bundles. Epo is found in the plasma and regulates erythrocyte production by promoting erythroid differentiation and initiating hemoglobin synthesis through activation of its cognate receptor (PMID 29458727). Epo also has neuroprotective activity against a variety of potential brain injuries and anti-apoptotic functions in several tissue types (PMID 11854521).
